Best Breakfast in the Outer Banks

Every place on this list actually serves breakfast — pancake houses, fishermen's counters, healthy cafes, bakeries and donut shops from Corolla down to Ocracoke. Hours are seasonal on the Outer Banks, so call ahead between November and March.

Our #1 breakfast pick

Healthy breakfast, juice bar & açaí bowls
Local favorite

Our top breakfast pick on the beach. Açaí and pitaya bowls, cold-pressed juice, smoothies, avocado toast, egg-white wraps and breakfast burritos with gluten-free and vegan options — made to order on the Nags Head beach road. Opens at 8 a.m. daily; go before 10 in summer or expect a short wait.

Daily 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m. (seasonal)

Morning coffee, made-to-order donuts and sit-down breakfast on the north beach.

Duck Donuts (Original)

Made-to-order cake donuts & coffee

Corolla Village Bakeshop & Coffee

Village bakery & espresso
$Under $15

A tiny bakeshop in historic Corolla Village doing scratch pastries, biscuits, quiche and espresso drinks. Walk over after the lighthouse opens.

Mornings, seasonal
Kitty Hawk & Kill Devil Hills

Beach-road classics, diner counters and the best doughnut case on the northern beaches.

John's Drive-In

Milkshakes & morning walk-up window
$Under $15

A Kitty Hawk walk-up counter that opens mid-morning — dolphin bites and legendary milkshakes rather than eggs, so it works as a late-breakfast stop after the beach, not a sit-down morning meal.

Opens late morning, seasonal
Nags Head

Fishermen's counters, healthy bowls and sunrise tables with a surf view.

Nags Head Fishing Pier House Restaurant

Breakfast over the water
$$$15–$30

A plain, cheerful dining room built out over the surf at milepost 11.5. Standard eggs-and-pancakes breakfast, but no other table on the beach has this view.

Breakfast daily, seasonal
Manteo & Roanoke Island

Waterfront coffee and bakery mornings a short walk from the Manteo boardwalk.

Poor Richard's Sandwich Shop

Waterfront breakfast counter
$Under $15

Downtown Manteo's morning hub since 1979 — egg sandwiches, biscuits and coffee with Shallowbag Bay out the window. Cash is easiest.

Breakfast weekday mornings

Cafe Pamlico Morning Pastry Case

Waterfront coffee & pastries
$$$15–$30

Coffee, scratch pastries and light breakfast plates inside the Tranquil House Inn on the Manteo waterfront — the closest thing downtown has to a sit-down morning meal.

Mornings, seasonal
Hatteras Island

Donut shops and biscuit counters that open before the surf report.

Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe

Home of the Apple Uglie
$Under $15

A Buxton legend: the Apple Uglie fried pastry, biscuits and coffee out of a small window. They open early and sell out — go before 9.

Early mornings, seasonal

Gingerbread House Bakery

Frisco bakery doing cinnamon rolls, sticky buns and breakfast pastries in the morning before it turns to pizza at night.

Mornings, seasonal

  • • Bakeries like Orange Blossom sell out of their signature items well before noon.
  • • Want a lighter start? Freshfit Cafe in Nags Head does juices, açaí bowls and gluten-free and vegan plates.
